Capturing More Than a Headshot

An Interview with Dennis Mock, San Diego Corporate Photographer

In today’s business world, a great corporate headshot is more than just a professional necessity—it’s your digital handshake, your personal brand, and often, your first impression. With so many photographers in San Diego, how do you choose someone who truly understands what makes you unique? To answer that, I sat down with Dennis Mock, a corporate headshot photographer whose name is synonymous with authentic, compelling portraits that help professionals stand out.

Over a cup of coffee in his sunlit studio, Dennis shared his philosophy, creative process, and what truly sets him apart from the crowded field of headshot photographers in San Diego.

Interviewer: Dennis, thanks for taking the time to chat. Let’s start at the beginning. How did you first get into photography, and what drew you to specialize in corporate headshots?

Dennis Mock: Thanks for having me! My journey with photography really took off in a unique way—I was actually the San Diego Padres team photographer, and during the 1984 media press day, I was tasked with photographing every single player in the organization. That experience taught me so much about working quickly, putting people at ease, and capturing genuine expressions, even in a high-pressure environment.

Interviewer: So many people dread getting their headshot taken. How do you help your clients relax and actually enjoy the session?

Dennis: That’s probably the comment I hear most: “I hate being in front of the camera!” My job is to change that. I start every session by getting to know my client—what they do, what they want their image to convey, even their quirks or insecurities. I use humor and conversation to break the ice. Sometimes, I’ll share a silly story or ask about their favorite places in San Diego. The goal is to make it feel less like a photoshoot and more like hanging out with a friend. It’s amazing how quickly people loosen up once they realize I’m on their side.

Interviewer: What’s your process for tailoring each headshot session to the individual client?

Dennis: Every person—and every brand—is different. Before a session, I send out a short questionnaire and sometimes hop on a call. I want to know: Are you looking for something classic and polished, or modern and approachable? What’s your industry? What do you want people to feel when they see your headshot? These details guide everything, from the backdrop and lighting to posing and wardrobe suggestions. Some clients want a studio look, others prefer outdoor shots with San Diego’s beautiful light. It’s about making sure their headshot aligns with their goals.

Interviewer: You mentioned wardrobe. Do you have any go-to advice for what clients should wear?

Dennis: Absolutely! The key is to keep it simple and timeless. Solid colors work best—avoid busy patterns or big logos. Layering can add depth, and I always suggest bringing a couple of options. Most importantly, wear something you feel confident in. If you’re uncomfortable, it’ll show on camera. And don’t stress about every detail; I’m there to help you look your best.

Interviewer: Let’s talk about the technical side. What makes a Dennis Mock headshot stand out from the crowd?

Dennis: I’m a stickler for details. Most of my sessions take place in the studio or on location at a client’s workplace, depending on what best fits their brand. I love using beauty lighting techniques for a flattering, editorial feel—lighting is everything, and it can truly elevate a headshot. I use natural light whenever possible and am just as comfortable with sophisticated studio setups. No matter where we shoot, I focus on posture, angles, and all the subtle adjustments that make a big difference. My editing style is clean and natural; I want you to look like the best version of yourself, not someone unrecognizable. There’s a clarity and vibrancy to my headshots that clients really appreciate.

Interviewer: How do you handle clients who are nervous about how they’ll look in photos?

Dennis: Empathy goes a long way. Most people have insecurities—maybe it’s a “bad side” or a feature they’re self-conscious about. I guide them through poses that flatter, and I’ll show them a few shots as we go. It builds trust. By the end, people are often surprised at how much they like their photos! That’s the best compliment I can get.

Interviewer: What’s the turnaround like for your clients? In this fast-paced business world, speed matters.

Dennis: I totally get it—people are busy. I pride myself on efficiency without sacrificing quality. Most clients receive their proof gallery within a couple of days, and final retouched images are available quickly after they make their selections. I keep the process seamless so they can get back to what they do best.

Interviewer: You’ve worked with so many professionals in San Diego. Can you share a memorable client story?

Dennis: There are so many! One that stands out is a local entrepreneur who’d never liked any of her photos. She was nervous, but we spent a few minutes chatting about her business and why she started it. By the end of the session, she was laughing and relaxed. When she saw her headshots, she told me it was the first time she actually felt proud to share her photo online. Moments like that remind me why I do this.

Interviewer: What do your clients say about their experience working with you?

Dennis: I’m grateful for my clients’ feedback. They often mention how easy and fun the process was, even if they started out dreading it! I’ve had clients tell me their new headshots helped them land jobs, get speaking gigs, or feel more confident in their professional lives. That’s the real reward for me.

Interviewer: For someone considering a new headshot, what’s your best advice?

Dennis: Don’t overthink it! The hardest part is usually booking the session. Once you’re here, I’ll guide you every step of the way. Bring your best smile, an open mind, and trust that we’re going to create something great together. And remember, your headshot is an investment in yourself.

Interviewer: Finally, what would you say is the “Dennis Mock difference”?

Dennis: For me, it’s all about connection. I believe everyone has a story worth telling, and my job is to help you tell it—through an image that feels like you. I combine technical skill with a personal touch. My goal isn’t just to take a picture; it’s to give you an experience that leaves you feeling confident and seen. That’s what makes what I do special.
